New System, New Outlook for Lo-Ma Football under Coach West –

(8-24-26) – Always a learning process.

New Logan-Magnolia football Coach Jack West takes over for Matt Straight, who resigned earlier this year, and takes over a Panther team that was 5-4 and finished 4th in the Class A, District 8 a season ago. He wants to concentrate on getting together a game plan that will work for him and his players.

“I think just trying to figure out what my philosophy is as a coach and how I think things should be run on a day-to-day basis. Just trying to get organized in that sense. I think the best way to learn and gain experience is just to kind of jump into the fire and do it.”

One player West believes will be a capable leader is returning quarterback Brody Davis, who threw for 1165 yds passing with 13 TDs a season ago.

“I think, No. 1, he's a phenomenal athlete. He's, you know, stand out in track, baseball, you know, every sport that he's out for, he does a really, really good job. He's just a really good all-around athlete. No. 2, he's really coachable. He's open to taking coaching and tries to apply that stuff the best he can.”

Defensively, West will look to players like Wade Hawkins to lead, who returns after earning 63 tackles, an interception, and two fumble recoveries a season ago.

“I think looking at the film from last year, Wade did a really good job just being a sure tackler. You weren't going to catch him out of position too much and he did a really good job finishing tackles once he was there.”

And the front seven for the Panthers has West and his staff excited for the upcoming season.

“We think we've got a lot of guys who can play on the defensive line and then at linebacker we got we feel like we have some bodies and people that can compete for roles and really push each other to see to get better every day and see who the best guy is for those spots.”

The competition begins at home when Logan-Magnolia takes on AHSTW on Friday.
