Offensive Uptick Leads HC Girls’ Soccer to 2-1 Start -

(4-4-25) – Outscoring your opponent 12 to 6 in the first three games of the season is often a positive.

It was for the Harlan Community girls’ soccer team, who used that scoring advantage to get off to a 2-1 start on the season.

It wasn’t all perfect as the Cyclones suffered a 3-0 loss to Treynor Tuesday. Coach Jared Boysen felt his team made some mistakes but were still in the game against a top-ranked team.

“We made a few mistakes around the goal that were costly. Some of the younger players going in… Grace mishandled one of the goals, as well. So, otherwise I felt we were right in it. But we do need to work (better) offensively.”

Aubrey Schwieso has gotten off to an electric start, scoring 5 goals in the first 3 games, including a hat trick in their season-opening 4-3 win over Panaroma. Boysen loves how his senior forward is leading the team.

“She does a great job as a leader. We've had a couple of people get injured and she's been the one right there to help them off the field. So just her character is very strong and, I think, that's helping the young girls as well.”

Carly Torneten provided a pair of goals in the Cyclones 8-0 win over Carroll Thursday.

“She was kind of our assist leader, getting the ball to Aubrey and she still was doing that in in these first two games as well. But she just has taken more of a role of scoring in the middle. She does a great job of dribbling the ball around.”

Harlan Community will next have an important Hawkeye 10 opener against rival St. Albert at Merrill Field on Monday.
