ONE AWAY: Woodbine Toughs Out Win Over G-R to Reach State Championship, 38-30 –

(11-12-25) – The Tigers will look to be crowned Kings of the 8-Player jungle.

Woodbine used a methodical, championship-caliber drive late along with strong, timely defense to hold on to a 38-30 victory over Gladbrook-Reinbeck in the 8-Player Football Semifinals at the UNI Dome Wednesday.

The Tigers, playing in their first game in Cedar Falls since 1997, would score 22 consecutive pts during the contest with the Rebels to take a 30-14 lead early in the 3rd qtr.

But the Rebels would battle back, scoring on a Trevor Mathern TD pass to Hudson Clark with :48 seconds left in the qtr then and tie the score at 30 on the first play of the 4th on a Pick-6 by Treyvon Herron.

That’s when Woodbine would march down the field for a 16-play, 65-yd drive that lasted 8 :13 and ended in a Landon Blum TD reception from Brody Pryor from 10 yds out to give the Tigers the lead back with 3:40 left.

Blum, who had 5 catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns, talked with KNOD Sports about how a false start penalty just prior to the score was helpful to his team.

“Yeah, I mean, when Jax (Pryor) did that false start, I was just like, ‘Thanks for giving me more space, you know, to work with,” Blum explained. “We all just kept our heads even and then I'm just glad to Brody threw the ball so I can make the play.”

Brody Pryor threw for 231 yds and 4 TD for the Tigers. He talked about how the team didn’t get down after game was tied early in the 4th quarter, erasing a 16-point lead.

“Oh, we were just ‘next play’ mentality the whole time. There's lots of game left and we just got to come out there and keep fighting, punch them in the face and that's what we did.”

Pryor did that literally earlier in the 2nd half, when his solid block sprung Blum for a 53-yd score. Blum had a WR screen from Pryor then reversed his field, allowing Pryor the opportunity to make the block that allowed him to get outside and give the Tigers a two-score advantage.

Woodbine Coach Dustin Crook expected Gladbrook-Reinbeck to be a tough test for his squad.

“Good team. They got some talented guys on that team and they work hard. You can tell why they deserve to be here to play. They took us down the wire but our guys came through to the end and make the plays to get the victory.”

Micah Moores had 102 yds rushing and 77 yds receiving for three total touchdowns for the Tigers.

“Yeah, he's just a hard-working kid,” Crook said of his junior tailback. “He does anything you ask. We ask him to do something. He's going to do it 110%. So, he's just looking every time he has his opportunity to go. He's going to make the most of it.”

Blum’s experience playing on the UNI Dome, in particular on the turf, for the first time was a learning experience for him.

“I was not used to it. I mean, the 1st touchdown or 2nd touchdown I scored on, I kind of biffed it before the jump. I just got to keep my feet under myself and not let that happen again because that was not good.”

Woodbine will play Bishop Garrigan for an 8-Player State Championship next Thursday at 9:30am.
