Shenandoah School Board Votes to Accept WIC Invite -

(7-23-25) – The door was left open and the Mustangs and Fillies went on through.

Shenandoah is the most recent school to look and switch conferences with their school board voting Monday to accept an invitation to the Western Iowa Conference.

Shenandoah Athletic Director Jon Weinrich says conversations about changing conferences have been going on for years.

“In 2021, when the state brought in socioeconomic status for football and put us in 1A, those are the schools that primarily match up with the WIC schools. And so, if there was ever an opportunity we sure would look at it and that came this year, obviously.”

The move, if approved by the Western Iowa Conference Board of Control, will come with pros and cons. For instance, the Mustangs/Fillies bowling and tennis programs have been very successful in the Hawkeye Ten. But those sports do not have conference championships in the WIC (No WIC schools have a boys’ bowling team, Tri-Center has the conferences only girls’ bowling team, and the only school with tennis teams is Audubon, which will be leaving for the Rolling Valley conference.)

“That's certainly disappointing because we've had a lot of success in those two sports. But we'll continue to make a challenging schedule for those programs and hopefully challenge them to the best of their ability. Obviously, when you get to the postseason, nothing changes there a whole lot.”

With that in mind, Weinrich hopes to continue competition in those and several other sports with Hawkeye Ten rivals.

“Geographically, there's some schools that are a lot closer and there's sports that it makes a lot of sense for us to continue to play.”

Should the WIC accept Shenandoah into their conference, the Mustangs/Fillies will likely begin play no earlier than the 2027-28 school year.

Full interview with Shenandoah AD Jon Weinrich is available above.
