Sonderman, Rau Lead Harlan Community Girls’ Track Back to State –

(5-16-25) – Another year, another trip to state for Lindsey Sonderman.

The Cyclones distance runner and UNI-commit will enjoy another trip to the Blue Oval in Des Moines as she will compete in the 3000M and 1500M runs in Class 3A State Tournament.

“It means a lot,” said Sonderman after qualifying for the 3000M with a time of 10:23.09, 2nd best in the state. “I always have a lot of fun memories from State. So, to be able to go there again and have a good senior year there, it means a lot.”

She’ll be joined in the 3000M by teammate Ashlyn Rau as the freshman received an at-large bid with a time of 10:49.30. Coach Jenny Hamilton was impressed with the maturity shown by Rau as she battled adversity against top competition.

“Ashlyn’s had a great season. She's mostly had just positives every single meet. She had some ups and downs in this meet and that experience is just going to make her better.”

The Harlan Community girls also qualified for the 4x400M relay with the team of Lili Schechinger, Abby Broeckelman, Paige Sonderman, and Aubrey Wegner, in a time of 4:10.12 and the 4x800M relay, ran by Schechinger, Sadie Alberti, Ashlyn Bieker, and Lindsey Sonderman, with a time of 10:02.42.

Hamilton feels this group of athletes has been special in many ways.

“It’s been such an enjoyable season. Just a really wonderful group of people to work with. They get along, they're receptive to feedback. They cheer for each other. They check in on each other so that just takes a lot off of the coaching plate when athletes are taking care of their teammates, then we can just focus on coaching.”

Next for the Cyclone girls’ track team will be competition at the 3A State Meet starting on Thursday.
