Summerfield Shuts Down Spartans, Leads IKM-Manning to District Win, 8-1 –

(7-6-24) – Bryc was nice for the Wolves Saturday.

Bryc Summerfield pitched 5.2 of no-hit innings to lead IKM-Manning to an 8-1 win over Exira-EHK in the Class 1A – District 4 semifinals. Summerfield says his breaking ball helped him get hitters out.

“They struggled hitting the off-speed pitch. You sit, throwing them at fastball for a while, then that next at bat, you come up, they throw a changeup few times and they're way in front of it, you know. And then it breaks in and they're not looking for it.”

Summerfield and reliever Tristen Barry combined for a 1-hitter to send the Wolves to a district semifinals.

It was a pitcher’s duel early with Summerfield and Spartans starter Alex Hansen as the Wolves Ross Kusel had the only hit for the two teams through the first 3 & ½ innings. IKM-Manning scored their first two runs in the 4th on a ball put in play by Kusel that was misplayed in the outfield to give the Wolves a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

A 6-run 6th for IKM-Manning would blow the game open with an RBI double from Zander Richards and Summerfield helping himself out with a 2-RBI single.

The defense was spectacular for both teams with several stellar plays, including a pair early by shortstop Lane Sams. Summerfield appreciated the defense behind him.

“Lane did a great job today. Made a lot of good plays. My defense helped a lot.”

Summerfield says it helps him with his pitching decisions when you can trust in your defense.

“It allows you to be way more aggressive. You know you can throw it way over the plate a lot more. You don't have to, you know, pitch around people cause you just know that your defense gonna make a play behind you.”

Exira-EHK ends their season at 6-12.

IKM-Manning will battle Coon Rapids-Bayard on Tuesday in the Class 1A – District 4 semifinals. The Crusaders were able to move past AHSTW by a final of 9-1.

Coon Rapids-Bayard got 5 strong innings from Kolby Culbertson, who struck out 10. The Vikings were held to just one hit by Caleb Hatch. AHSTW finishes their season at 9-14.
