System Giving Cyclone Boys’ Soccer Chances to Thrive -

(4-19-26) - For Harlan Community boys’ soccer Coach Levi Culp, tweaks to the offense are starting to take shape.

“Offensively, we're starting to see that the boys are overcorrecting in some areas,” Culp told KNOD Sports. “Meaning it looks like they pass too much sometimes, which is a great problem to have and they've been working on the last two weeks trying to balance out that so that we can be more direct and get down the field and get chances.”

Cyclone boys’ soccer is 2-0-1 in the past three games, beating Riverside 10-1, tying Kuemper Catholic 2-2, and defeating Tri-Center 1-0. Jesse Vandervort and Cody Swank each had hat tricks against the Bulldogs, while Mitchell Vo scored with 13 minutes left to against the Trojans to get the win. Culp thinks his coaching approach will allow Vo to flourish.

“I'm actually surprised that was Mitchell's first goal. He is one of our very good midfielders in that trio that we got in there. He works very hard for us. He stabilizes us wherever we need him to. He's played on our backline, the midfield, and last night he even got a little bit of time at striker. He is a player that will thrive under our new system.”

Culp adds the hard work his players have put into their defense is also showing results.

“Our boys have been really hard at work defensively and not making defensive turnovers, meaning our back line has the ball and we lose it in our own third in front of our goals. I've been seeing very few of those recently and that helps out our goalie, Lucas Paulsen, quite a bit.”

Harlan Community boys’ soccer will take their .500 record on road against Red Oak Monday.
