Tough Match-ups at District See Cyclone Boys’ Tennis Season End –

(5-18-26) – Harlan Community boys’ tennis saw their season end at the District Meet in Red Oak Saturday, but it wasn’t due to lack of effort.

The Cyclones Top-2 players, Kobe Klaassen and Caden Herbst teamed up for doubles play and got the win in their opening round match, 6-1, 6-1, over Red Oak’s Davis Mayberry and Damian Goodman for the only win their squad would get at the meet. Coach Michael Rueschenberg felt pairing them up would give them an advantage.

“I think just having that ability together on the court where they kind of know each other's style of play, they know what each other wants to do and is good at. So I think that was really something that we thought about and that we considered. And overall, you know, we just thought that doubles would be a little bit better chance for them to have some success than the singles bracket.”

But their advantage would slip away as Atlantic’s Zayden Parker and Preston Harder beat them in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-2.

Dale Scheuring and Jameson Arentson fell in their opening round doubles match to Red Oak’s Kaleb Sebeniecher and AJ Beeson, 6-2, 6-2. Rueschenberg felt Scheuring and Arentson’s performance at the Hawkeye Ten Conference Championships would give them some momentum.

“We weren't necessarily anticipating having Jameson and Dale play doubles together at both conference and districts. But when you go out there and they play as well as they did at conference, there was no way we were going to kind of split that team up. We had to let them ride and play together in districts,” Rueschenberg explained. “They didn't get the easiest draw from the bracket, and that's what happens when you're not a seeded team at District. It's just one big bracket of doubles, and unfortunately, depending on who gets drawn when, you might not get the best draw and that's kind of what they ran into.”

In district singles play, senior Jonas Reynolds dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to tournament runner-up Creighton Bird of Clarinda, and Ramsey Hussing lost 6-3, 6-0 to Glenwood’s Dylan Cutshall.

Rueschenberg believes the experience his athletes gained during this season could mean big things for his squad next season.

“I think the experience of having these guys, we've gotten them out as sophomores or freshmen, and hopefully that hard work of playing for multiple years finally pays off next year and we can go make a lot of noise.”

Cyclone Boys’ Tennis finishes their season 5-7 in dual play.
