Treynor Coach Casey Continues to have High Expectations -

(8-24-26) – Winning traditions demand high expectations.

That’s how Treynor football Coach Jeff Casey sees his tenure with the Cardinals and why he feels his kids work hard each and every year to earn success.

“When you can put together a bunch of winning seasons over a long period of time, it just kind of becomes the norm and the expectation and I know there's high expectations here and a high standard here that we're trying to achieve.”

The senior-laden Cardinals were 9-2 last season, just a game away from reaching the UNI Dome. Although there are holes to fill, Casey thinks some of his returning players can certainly fill the void, starting with receiver Brock Casey.

“(Brock) was basically a starter as a sophomore and he also played as a freshman on the varsity level, so there's not a lot on the field that really rattles him. He's just got like his off seasons are filled with camps and and different competitive things that he's doing for football and so he's kind of traveled around the Midwest and done a lot of that stuff and so he stays pretty calm and poised out there on the field and so that certainly helps.”

The ball-hawking defense of Treynor picked off an incredible 22 passes a year ago, tying for 4th overall in the state. Casey says his team’s athleticism allows them to make those types of plays.

“It's just a lot of really good athletes,” said Casey about his secondary. “We played five defensive backs last year on the field and we felt that was the best thing for us based on the kids that we had and the opponents we were playing against and so just getting those fast super athletic kids out there and making them or letting them make plays.”

Casey also believes that the development of players for the future has the Cardinals reloading every year, instead of rebuilding.

“That's something that we as a coaching staff really hang our hat on here. We've started doing some unique things just in terms of how we practice and train our guys and we're probably four or five years into that process now. We've always taken development as a really important issue, but really doubled down on that the last several years here and maybe approach our practice schedules a little bit different and how we rep kids in practice. We've made some sacrifices as coaches to try to help with that development process and I think it's paid off.”

Treynor will hope it pays off again this season and they’ll take those first steps against Riverside on Friday.
