Treynor Girls, Riverside Boys Claim WIC Track Championships -
(5-5-26) – The Western Iowa Conference Track & Field Championships took place at Missouri Valley on Tuesday and while the weather was cold, the action on the oval was hot. Treynor would dominate the girls’ portion of the meet, winning the team championship with 179 points. The Cardinals Rylee Hemmingsen had an unforgettable night, winning four individual events: the high jump, 100m, 200m, and 100m hurdles. Ally Adams helped Underwood by winning the 400 in 1:00.93 and helping in the 4 by 100 team to victory. Adams was determined to get that championship in the 400 after being runner-up a season ago. “I knew I really wanted to get out there and win it, but I think that's what really changed today was my attitude. I really had the attitude, just get out there and get it, and I think that's what I did, and I'm really happy with my race today.” IKM-Manning got a win in the long jump from Annabelle Blum, who’s determination and work ethic helped guide who to a WIC title. “It's just so great. I just worked so hard this season, so I just feels great to have it pay off.” Riverside finished 2nd with 111 pts while IKM-Manning was 3rd. The boys side of the WIC Championships saw a tighter battle as Riverside boys would take home the team conference title with 158 pts. Jaxon Gordon helped the Bulldogs with a win in the 110m hurdles. He feels his team’s hard work in the hurdles this offseason has paid off. “We just really put in a lot of work in the offseason and during the season, and I think we got a lot of practices where we're focusing really hard on hurdles and speed work, and I think that really helps us working as a team to get better as a whole.” Riverside also got individual wins from Dawson Henderson in the 3200m and Brody Henderson in the 1600m and won the 4x400m relay with Gordon, Dawson Henderson, Cole Jeppesen, and Owen Fenner. Collin Harder took two events: the 400m (50.68) and 800m (1:55.28). He talked about his approach in both events. “I knew with 400, I knew there was gonna be good competition in that. Legs are feeling light, I was feeling good, I was ready to go run.” Tri-Center saw Cameron Wallar win the WIC long jump title with a distance of 19-04.50. Wallar says he’s been practicing the long jump in conjunction with his work in the hurdles. “I've been doing a lot of drills. It's the main focus that I've been doing throughout the year. I do hurdles too, but at the end of practice, I always get a little bit of long jumping in. At least get 3 jumps in every single practice and just working myself throughout the entire year.” Treynor boys finished 2nd with 131 pts while Underwood finished 3rd.
