Treynor Visits Underwood in Key 1A District Contest -

(8-25-25) – Another tussle on the gridiron for two iconic programs as #5 Treynor battles #6 Underwood in a key 1A-District 8 contest.

The rivalry between the teams goes back to the competition together in the Western Iowa Conference where the athletes face each other in multiple sports over a season, according to Treynor Coach Jeff Casey.

“Obviously the proximity and being conference schools and playing each other year-round in all the sports and the kids know each other.”

Underwood comes off a big district win over Tri-Center last week that Coach Nate Mechaelsen says was helped by a fast start.

“Had a great week of practice came out and started really fast in the Tri-Center game and that led to a really good victory.”

Casey has leaned on his seniors to take the reins of this Cardinals team this season.

“These guys have done a really good job with owning a lot of things that we do and taking the lead on some things in practice and you see him helping out some of the younger guys.”

For the Eagles, Garrett Luett’s football knowledge gives a huge advantage to Mechaelsen’s team.

“Just to have that experience behind center, a kid that's confident, kid that's going to put in the time and be super prepared, and then a kid that's really, really competitive. You know, that's obviously a huge benefit for us.”

Mechaelsen feels that the stakes keep getting higher whenever Underwood plays Treynor.

“Recently, I think the stakes have been... really, really high, probably the last five or six years. It comes down to a district championship or a playoff win or something like that.

“We have a lot of respect for that program.”

Casey says that Underwood pushes his team to play their best.

“I think teams like that, we continually make each other better. We push each other, and it brings out the best in the teams.”

Third time these two teams will meet up in less than a year. The two games last season were each decided by a single point.

The game will air on KNOD 2, The Deuce, streaming www.knodfm.com.
