Weather has Cyclone Boys’ Track Eager to Compete -

(4-8-26) – Gray skies are giving track teams the blues.

Outdoor sports are always affected by weather. In Iowa, high school track really has been feeling it this spring. Poor weather has forced the postponement or cancellation of several meets. In the case of Harlan Community, their boys have not been able to compete since March 26th in Carroll.

“It's obviously not what you want to do. You know, you don't want to be getting meets in and kind of keeping somewhat of a routine with track,” said Cyclone Boys’ Track Coach Sam Brummer. “Obviously, Mother Nature had other plans and not only for track, obviously for everybody. So, it's been just a lot of indoor stuff.”

Brummer is grateful for opportunities for his athletes to workout at the Petersen Wellness Center, when able, and amenities at Harlan Community to allow athletes to do some indoor training as well.

The hope is that the weather will change so athletes, like Cade Nelson, can continue to progress in various events. Nelson finished 4th in the 200M at Carroll with a time of 23.88 and has been a key cog in several relay events. Brummer believes Nelson’s experience is helping him improve this season.

“I think one of the biggest things that benefits Cade from track is that we did it last year. So now it's just another year under your belt. You don't have the nervousness or maybe the anxiety, so to speak, of what to expect.”

Brummer also likes the start of junior Alex McCulley and sophomore Carson Baughman, who finished 5th and 6th respectively in the 400M Hurdles at Carroll.
“Definitely looking for Alex and Carson to have good years in all our hurdle events and anything we put them in. They both got the right mindset to get out and attack it and compete so, I think we'll be all right.”

The Cyclone boys’ track team is hoping to participate in the Denison-Schleswig Co-Ed Meet on Friday… weather permitting.
