Woodbine Boys’ BKB Drops State Quarterfinal to St. Edmond, 60-44 -

(3-10-26) – This time, third wasn’t the charm for the Tigers.

The Boys’ 1A State Quarterfinals saw Woodbine battle No. 1-ranked St. Edmond and the Gaels used a 2nd qtr run to roll over the Tigers, 60-44.

After a hard-fought 1st qtr and a half, the Tigers were shutout for the final 4:10 of the 1st half as the Gaels went on a 9-0 run. That run turned a 4-pt game into a 13-pt halftime lead for St. Edmond to break the game open.

Tigers Coach Kyle Bartels felt his team’s lack of outside shooting was key.

“I think the biggest difference was we weren't able to hit the outside shot. We were 1-17 from three (point range), and I think that really hurt us. They got some buckets in transition, which we knew they were really good at, but I thought overall we played pretty good on defense. But yeah, I know when all of our points only come from three kids and we're not hitting the outside shot, it's tough to beat a good team like that.”

Woodbine got 20 pts and 10 rebounds from junior Landon Blum, his 12 double-double of the season.

“We just couldn't get shots today, unfortunately,” said Blum after the Tigers third consecutive loss in the state quarterfinals. “Seems like it's like that every year we get here, but it is what it is. But, really proud of our team and what we've been through to get here. So, I'm just proud of our guys.”

Woodbine shot 34 percent from the floor but just 5.9 percent from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, St. Edmond hit 7 of 18 from 3pt-range. The Gaels also made the most of 18 turnovers by the Tigers, turning them into 14 pts.

St. Edmond got 17 pts and 9 boards from Hunter Horn. They’ll face Burlington-Notre Dame in the 1A Semifinals on Thursday.

It was tough loss for seniors Brody Pryor and Jax Pryor, who’ve been the leadership core for the Tigers during this current run.

“I wouldn't want to play with any other guys, any other team,” said Brody Pryor, who had 7 pts in his final game for Woodbine. “I wouldn't trade all the last four years for anything. It's been a true blessing.”

Jax Pryor talked about the memories he’ll have from reaching the state tournament three years in a row.

“I mean, just seeing the fan base, that's a good memory to have. Just looking up and you got all the fans just on your back.”

Bartels feels the accomplishments of Woodbine sports reaching the heights they have shows the dedication the families and community has towards their school and their athletes.

“It goes back to the parents, and how much time and effort they put into these kids in their own little league and then trusting us high school coaches to take it and then they just continue to grow and had great lessons and skill coming in and we were able to translate that. I think it just shows that a small school can be successful. You know, we're one of the few unconsolidated schools in the state of Iowa and we're proud of that.”

Woodbine finishes their season 17-9.
