Young Lady Vikes BB Team Looks to Make Waves in WIC –

(11-25-24) – Good things. Bad things.

That’s how AHSTW girls’ basketball Coach Jason McCall saw his team perform to a 12-9 record last season.

“It was a true definition of an up and down season. I thought we played pretty above average at times, and then there were times that we struggled, but for the most part, the girls stuck in, bought in, and overall had a great season.”

Although 4 of the 5 regular starters graduated, nearly half of this year’s Lady Vikes roster received playing time at the varsity level last season. McCall knows this will be a huge benefit to his young team this season.

“Anytime you can get some varsity minutes as a freshman or sophomore, it does more good for you than bad, if anything, you kind of get thrown into the fire a little bit and have to learn the hard way, but overall it's a great experience for them.”

Part of the off-season process for his young team was to compete in different events against top-ranked talent to see what it takes to compete at the highest level.

“You want to see those teams because you want to have the understanding of what it will take,” said McCall. “There's always a threshold in terms of effort and energy that your mind kind of tells you to stop and you see these teams that play faster, play harder, or just have overall more talent. You have to find another level to your game.”

McCall will look to junior pair of Ava and Makenna Paulsen to lead this young group.

“They're the oldest. You know, they're the grandmas of the group and they have to do their job of showing up and setting the standard of what Lady Vikes basketball is all about.”

AHSTW begins their season against Woodbine on Monday. (KNOD 105.3FM)
