CANCELLATIONS & CLOSURES
KNOD, Kool Gold 105. In an effort to provide the public with information on the local effect that the coronavirus pandemic is having to our KNOD listening area, here are some virus-related postponements and cancellations.
Harlan Parks and Pool Information - (5-29-20) -
Effective Monday, June 1st, playgrounds, shelter houses and the skate park in the Harlan City Parks will be open to the public. Restrooms will begin opening on Monday, June 1st. Portable restrooms at Little George Park and North Park will NOT be available at this time. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has only permitted use of swimming pools for swimming laps and swimming lessons.
PENDING FINAL CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL:
Effective Wednesday, June 3rd from 4 to 7 pm, lap swimming will be available daily for a cost of $2 per day. One adult supervisory guest may accompany a minor if the minor is swimming laps. Walking, water aerobics and sunbathing are not considered lap swimming.
Swim Lessons will be available for American Red Cross Level 3 and up. Please stay posted for further sign-up information. The possibility of Level 1 and Level 2 swim lessons will be reviewed for July. The current Governor's proclamation extends through June 17th. The Park Board will review options for further swimming pool operations when there are changes to the proclamation. Please practice personal responsibility and take steps to protect yourself and others through social distancing of staying 6 feet apart from others, wash/disinfect your hands often, consider wearing a mask if you will be in close proximity to others and stay home if you have underlying health conditions of feeling ill.
St. Peter's Parish Picnic in Defiance has bee POSTPONED until Nov. 21st. It will be now be called St. Pete's Fest. Additional details will be provided at a later date.
Bill Riley Talent Search cancelled this season -
The Bill Riley Talent Search announced Friday that its 2020 season is postponed to 2021 because of the ongoing threat of COVID-19. And, on Monday, singer Chris Stapleton cancelled his appearance at the Fair this year, but rescheduled for 2021.Regular vendors at the Iowa State Fair said they are waiting to hear if their biggest events will go on as planned.
This year, with COVID-19, Farmer's Market will be distributing the applications and vouchers differently. All individuals 60+ that is interested in receiving them will call into the Connections office at 1-800-432-9209 and request an application. They will mail out an application with a postage paid return envelope. Individuals will fully complete the application and mail it back into their office. Once they receive the completed application, they will mail out the vouchers to them. They will not accept walk-in requests at the centers no offices. they must call in to receive one. Applications will be mailed out starting June 1st. If you have any questions, please call Jeanette at 755-3779 and leave a message.
Harlan City Hall is now open for foot traffic. They ask that you please call ahead and make an appointment before coming to the office.
Home Delivered Meals will continue until the Harlan Senior Center reopens. At this time they still do not have a re-open date for the center. They will re-evaluate the first week of june. The Harlan Senior Center will however look at maybe having all hot home delivered meals to go out instead of the frozen for two weeks. Currently they do n ot know the date these home delivered hot meals will start. If you have any questions, please call Jeanette at 755-3379 and leave a message.
Harrison County Conservation Board and the Woodbine Kiwanis have decided to cancel the annual Kid’s Fishing Day at Willow Lake scheduled for Saturday, June 6th. Due to the fact that many of our volunteers are 65 years old or older based on CDC guidelines of at risk individuals and possible large groups, it was decided to be the safest for everyone. June 5, 6, and 7 are Iowa’s Free Fishing Days to encourage people to get out and fish on their own. HCCB is planning smaller conservation education programs later in the summer and will be posted on our Facebook page and HarrisonCountyParks.org.
Iowa Community Kitchen Food Service Update (5-27-20) -
The Iowa Community Kitchen will be back in operation on June 1st distributing meals to high risk individuals. If you would like to sign up for the program, please call 712/571-9056 by noon each Saturday to receive meals on Monday. You MUST be on the list to receive these meals each week. Iowa Community Kitchen will start giving meals on Mondays starting at 3 pm at the First Baptist Church in Harlan or you can request delivery.
More face masks are needed -
Additional cloth mask donations are need for use in public facilities by Myrtue Medical Center and for the public. If you are making cloth masks for donation, instructions on how to sew the masks are available at myrtuemedical.org/covd-19-updates.
The IKM-Manning Community School District administration and the junior class sponsors on Thursday, made a decision on cancellation of prom. They had set a tentative rescheduled date of June 20 for that event. However, following the most recent recommendations and guidance from Gov. Kim Reynolds, the Iowa Department of Education and the Iowa Department of Public Health, the two groups determined that it would just not be feasible to host prom this year.

The Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut will resume worship services on June 7th, at 9:30 am.
2020 ROAR INTO HARLAN SEASON CANCELLED -
Because of both current state and unpredictable future of “normal” life activities due to the COVID-19 virus, it has been decided to cancel the 2020 Roar Into Harlan season. This applies to all of the regularly scheduled monthly Thursday Roar Into Harlan nights, May-September 2020. Please know you will be missed! Until we can gather and Roar again, please know our thoughts are with all of you. Ride safe!
Update from Shelby County COAD:
With additional businesses opening and restrictions loosening, there will be a change or update to the Grocery Assistance phone lines. Starting the week of June 1st, the phone lines will be open only one night to take orders - Thursdays. The firs Thursday will be June 4th. Orders placed on Thursday will be ready for pick-up on the following Saturday. To place an order, call 833-356-8189. If you would like to volunteer to help with the grocery shopping programs, please call the Shelby county Chamber at 755-2114.
In order to keep the community safe and healthy due to COVID-19, the city of Shelby has decided to postpone Shelby's 150th celebration. It has been rescheduled for June 25-27, 2021. Commemorative ornaments, calendars, cookbooks and t-shirts are still available to purchase at the Shelby City Hall.
STHS (Shelby Tennant High School) Alumni Banquet has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus. It has been rescheduled for June 26th at 5 pm to coincide with the town of Shelby's 150 + 1 celebration.
Shelby Vacation Bible School Day Camp 2020 has been cancelled. Day camp will return on June 14th through 17th, 2021. The theme will be "Brand New" Auto Shop.
All Shelby County State Bank locations will be open and continue to operate in "drive-thru" only mode. The only exception will be their Irwin location in which the lobby will be accessible to customers with social distancing measures in place. All banks will have their own hours and those will be posted at each location.
Walnut AMVETS Antique Show, usually held Father's Day Weekend, has been cancelled for this year.
West Central Community Action's Shelby County Food Pantry has recently received some generous grants and donations to allow them to continue assisting families and individuals facing food insecurity during these uncertain and difficult times. The food pantry is located at 1017 7th Street in downtown Harlan. Any family or individual residing in Shelby County is eligible to receive assistance. They are requiring people to call ahead and schedule an appointment for curbside pickup as their offices are currently closed to the public. boxes of food are prepacked and put together according to household size. Each package includes canned goods, boxed meals, and other non-perishable items, as well as frozen meat and toiletry items. For anyone wishing to donate or pick up food, call 755-5602 Monday through Friday.
URGENT: Please do not flush anything down a toilet other than toilet paper. Flushing any other items (paper towels, wash cloths, wipes of any kind, feminine hygiene products, diapers, disposable gloves, etc.) WILL damage and possibly shut down our sewer systems. Cooking Grease is prohibited from being disposed into the sewer system. Please place cooking grease into an approved container or jar and dispose in the garbage.
