Cyclones BB Wins Home-Opener Over LeMars, 4-2 -

(5-18-24) – The Mighty Quinn had the mighty blow of the game on Friday.

Quinn Koesters slapped a 2-out, 2-run double to left in 4th and Weston Reisz threw 4 strong innings to lead Harlan Community to a 4-2 win over LeMars.

Koesters talked with KNOD Sports about the hit that gave the Cyclones the lead.

“(My) teammates put me in a good position there and I saw fastball and drove it out to left.”

Harlan Community Head Coach Heath Stein was impressed with Koester’s approach in that at-bat.

“He got a 2-0 count there and put a good swing on that ball. It's probably the hardest hit, farthest hit ball I've ever seen Quinn have and it couldn't have been at a better time.”

Cyclone designated hitter Gavin Bruck tied the game in the 4th with a 2-out, RBI single.

“I was really just looking for anything to hit. Really, anything close and you know, I got it. So I hit it out to right and you know.”

Weston Reisz went 4 innings and gave up 2 runs on just 1 hit while striking out 6. Stein like how Reisz rebounded after early struggles.

“Weston battled himself a little bit early on a couple of free bases piled up and they got a couple of guns early, but he settled in nicely and made pitches when he had to, and behind him the defense was very, very good.”

Colton Schnieder threw 3 scoreless frames for the save, striking out the side in the 7th.

Starting 3-0 is great, but Stein knows that it’s early and it’s a long season so learning how to win the close ones early on is important.

“The record does matter, but at the same time we were 0-5 last year and we know how that turned out. So, it's all a process of getting in these situations trying to slow the game down, learning from them and moving on.”

For Bruck, starting the season strong has been fantastic.

“It's a lot of fun to win. You know, losing isn't fun. Winning is always fun, you know, it's good to have a good start to the season.”

Harlan Community next plays against Dallas Center-Grimes on Monday.
