Pitching Falters Late as Harlan Community BB Drop Two to Glenwood -

(6-10-24) – The Cyclones were down arms in the pen and the Rams exploited it.

Glenwood’s Kayden Anderson was as advertised, hitting 3 homers and driving in 9 runs as his team swept a doubleheader over Harlan Community, 16-7 and 10-7.

The Rams scored 23 of their 26 runs in the double dip in the 5th inning or later.

“Our starting pitching has been so good that we haven't had to use a ton of guys," said Harlan Community Coach Heath Stein. "We just kind of had Quinn (Koesters) and Colton (Schneider) in the bullpen and then we play on Saturday and we use Colton a couple times. We didn't want to use him tonight.”

The short bullpen led to three Cyclones making their season debuts on the bump. In Game 1, Owen Neve, who’s been throwing in JV, came in relief of Caleb Schleis. Landon Kaufman and Cade Nelson saw the mound in Game 2, following Koester’s first career varsity start. The relief trio combined to give up 12 runs, 11 of the earned, in 3.1 innings pitched.

“A lot of these guys are pretty green. They got tossed in the fire a little bit.”

Stein pointed the finger at himself.

“I believe myself for not being prepared. I should have been more prepared knowing that our starters aren't going to roll like that the whole time. You can't just count on two guys out of the bullpen.”

Despite the loss, Stein did see a nice performance at the plate from Schneider. The freshman was 4 for 6 in the twin bill with 5 RBI.

“Really talented kid. Really has grown into his body a little bit and his skills and he's finding the barrel a lot. He's in a good spot at the plate.”

Stein had a simple message for his team following last night’s loss.

“Stay together. Keep working. We're gonna have these long weeks. Some guys are going to get tossed in the fire. You know, you got to learn from it. We've got three more games this week. Finish it out.”

The Cyclone long week continues with a trip to take on Denison-Schleswig Tuesday (KNOD 105.3FM)
