Tri-Center's Isaac Wohlhuter (5-16-24)

Tri-Center BB Tops Boyer Valley, 6-2, Behind Wohlhuter’s 12 K’s –

(5-17-24) – Can’t get much more dominant to start a season.

Tri-Center’s Isaac Wohlhuter struck out the first 8 Boyer Valley batters of the game, on his way to 12 in 5 innings of work, leading his team to 6-2 victory Thursday.

“I felt really confident. I knew that our guys in the field were able to field the ball if I threw strikes, so I just went and threw strikes.”

Wohlhuter was so effective, he didn’t allow a 3-ball count until 2 outs in the 5th. That resulted in his lone walk of the outing. Only three Bulldogs reached base while he was on the mound, a 2-out, 3rd inning double by Tristen Burkhart & an error.

Wohlhuter had confidence in his fastball early and he was able to work off that pitch to overpower Boyer Valley’s hitters.

“I have a fastball and curveball and I sometimes throw a change it, but I wasn't really feeling my change up today, so I just threw a lot of fastballs and curveballs, and I really felt both those pitches.”

The Trojans help Wohlhuter by giving him a 3-0 lead in the first, as Bulldog start Ben Lantz struggled to find the strikezone. Two walks and an error loaded the bases, leading to an RBI groundout by Cael Corrin to begin the scoring. A bunt single on a safety squeeze by Cameron Hoden increased the lead and Trenton Huebner had an RBI single.

It could’ve been worse,  but Huebner was thrown out by Boyer Valley centerfield Tristen Burkhart trying to turn his single into a double.

Wohlhuter liked seeing his bench get him that early offense, considering Tri-Center was missing four starters due to State Track.

“Seeing that some of the younger kids can step up and hit the ball to give us room, score 3 (runs) and give the pitcher some comfortability to pitch whatever pitches he wants.”

Ben Lantz settled down after that but got touched up again for two more runs in the 4th before being relieved by Logan Thomsen.

Boyer Valley got their lone runs of the game with a two-out rally in the 7th. The Bulldogs loaded the bases against Trojans reliever Cael Witt on a pair of HBP’s and a walk before pinch hitter Logan Malone got his first hit at the varsity level to drive in two runs.

Getting that first win under your belt is important to start the season and Wohlhuter knows the experience the younger players get will help them as they try to navigate a difficult Western Iowa Conference.

And Wohlhuter is also looking forward to the challenge.

“Underwood will be really tough. Treynor. I've seen Logan's 2-1 or they played a couple of games and they beat a really good Coon Rapids-Bayard team, so it can be a toss-up any game and I'm excited to see where it can go.”
